Expansion & Renovation - SAFE Credit Union Convention Center

Building off the footprint established in 1974, and expanded in the mid 90’s, Sacramento has leveled the playing field for convention space in Northern California. Henderson Engineers led the building systems design for the demolition of the 1974 structure, making room for a 225,000 SF multi-level addition that provides new signature entry points, lobbies, and pre-function space along the North, East, and West faces of the complex. Nominally 90,000 SF of modern exhibit space was added at grade to create a nearly 200,000 SF contiguous hall. New divisible meeting room pods/event spaces anchor the East and West expansions to the complex. An elevated 40,000 SF ballroom, with new 10,000 SF kitchen and commissary, tops the exhibit hall expansion and doubles as a sub-dividable multi-purpose/meeting space. Finally, an outdoor plaza will take events and exhibits out into the Northern California air and tie into the newly expanded and renovated Safe Credit Union Theater to the South.

An innovative and artfully engineered solution allowed the existing 1974 central plant to remain in place while the building around it was removed and demolished. It was then re-built from the inside with modern, high-efficiency equipment supporting the West expansion and tying in to the 1996 central plant to offer a measure of redundancy to the campus.
